Last week, I attended a series of expert-led sessions hosted by Bird & Bird , in partnership with the Pet Industry Federation (PIF) , focused on a challenge that’s still very real for our industry: exporting pet products from the UK into the EU post‑Brexit .

First, a genuine thank you to PIF for the invitation and for bringing businesses together to talk openly about what’s working, what isn’t, and where the risks really sit.

These conversations matter , because exporting into Europe today is not what it was five years ago, and pretending otherwise helps no one.

Exporting to the EU: This Is the New Normal

One of the clearest messages from the sessions was this: UK businesses are now treated as third‑country exporters when selling into the EU.

That single shift has a knock‑on effect across almost every part of a business, including:

Regulatory responsibility
Labelling and product compliance
Supply chain structure
Time to market
Cost and commercial viability

This isn’t a temporary hurdle or a “teething problem.” It’s a structural change and it’s here to stay.

For many pet businesses, exporting into Europe is no longer just a sales decision. It’s a strategic one.

Compliance Isn’t a Box to Tick - It’s the Price of Entry

One line that really stuck with me was:
“Compliance isn’t optional, it’s a requirement for market access.”

For pet product manufacturers and brands, that means navigating a layered and often frustrating framework:

EU‑wide rules alongside individual Member State requirements
Product‑specific regulations (pet food, supplements, accessories, packaging)
Strict labelling and language obligations
Sustainability and recycling legislation
The need for an EU‑based “responsible person” for non‑EU companies

Get this wrong and the consequences are serious - from goods being stopped or destroyed at the border, to fines, lost retail relationships, and reputational damage that’s hard to undo.

What I see time and again is businesses underestimating this stage. A great product isn’t enough. You have to be operationally ready to export.

Brand Protection: Often Missed, Always Costly

Intellectual property came up repeatedly - and for good reason.

Many UK brands assume their trademarks and designs automatically protect them in Europe. They don’t.

Without EU‑level protection, brands are exposed to:

Copycats and lookalikes
Weak enforcement options
Lost market share or worse, loss of brand control

Leaving this too late can mean expensive disputes or forced rebrands. For growing pet brands, that’s not just a legal headache, it’s a commercial risk.

There’s No Single “EU Market”

Another important takeaway: Europe isn’t one market. Each country brings its own:

Labelling and language rules
Compliance nuances
Routes to market (retail, distributor, DTC)
Consumer behaviours and expectations

France, for example, is a huge opportunity but success there often requires strong local knowledge, trusted distribution partners, and sometimes an on‑the‑ground presence.

This is where the mindset has to shift from “exporting products” to "building a European strategy."

This is where my world - recruitment, comes sharply into focus. Because none of this works without the right people.

We’re seeing growing demand for:

The businesses that are succeeding in Europe aren’t trying to do it all remotely from the UK. They’re investing in people who understand the landscape and can operate within it. Done right, talent doesn’t just support growth, it enables it.

Global Pet Expo 2026 in Orlando brought together over 1,000 exhibitors and offered a clear view of where the global pet industry is heading.

I made a conscious decision to approach this show properly. This wasn’t a quick walk around the floor or a handful of surface-level conversations. I spent time in the sessions, worked my way through every aisle, and gave real attention to the New Product Showcase. I spoke to founders, commercial leaders, marketers, and operators, and listened carefully to what people were saying.

When you take that approach, you stop seeing just what is in front of you. You start to understand what is coming next.

Key Trends from Global Pet Expo 2026

The data released by the American Pet Products Association during the show reinforces what you can feel in the room.

The US pet industry reached $158 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow again in 2026. Growth remains steady, even against a challenging economic backdrop.

What stands out more than the size of the market, however, is how it is evolving .

Consumers are becoming more considered in how they spend. Pet ownership remains strong, but spending behaviour is shifting towards value, quality, and wellbeing. This is a more mature, more intentional market.

For businesses, this changes the focus. Success is no longer driven purely by product. It is driven by how effectively that product is taken to market, positioned, and executed .

That is where the real difference is made.

The New Product Showcase: Where Innovation Meets Reality

The New Product Showcase is one of the most valuable parts of Global Pet Expo, and it is where I spent a significant amount of time.

Working through food, treats, technology, enrichment, and accessories in detail, you quickly begin to see what is genuinely innovative and what is more incremental. More importantly, you start to understand which products have the potential to succeed commercially.

That is where experience comes into play.

It is not simply about identifying a strong idea. It is about understanding how that idea translates into real-world performance.

Who is going to take this product to market?
Who is going to build the relationships that get it into the right retail channels?
Who is going to scale it effectively?

There is a huge amount of respect due to the people who take an idea from concept to shelf. However, ideas alone do not build businesses.

People do.

I Sat in the Petfluence Studio — This Is What I Took From It

Spending time in the Petfluence Studio and listening to the conversations taking place there was one of the clearest indicators of where this industry is heading.

This was not a side feature or something experimental. It reflected a real shift in how brands are thinking about growth .

Content, creators, and brand partnerships are now playing a central role in how products are discovered and purchased. Brand-building no longer starts at the shelf. It starts much earlier, through storytelling, community, and digital presence.

The US market is leading this shift with intent .

This is not simply a marketing evolution. It requires a different type of thinking and, importantly, a different calibre of talent.

The individuals who can bridge brand, content, and commercial performance are not easy to find. When businesses get this right, the impact is significant.

A Show That Reflects the Entire Industry

What stood out throughout the show was the level of thought behind how it was structured.

Every category had space and presence. Aquatics, reptiles, small animals, cats, and dogs were all represented in a way that felt intentional and considered.

That matters, because the industry is not defined by one segment. It is built collectively, and the strength of the sector comes from that diversity.

The quality of some of the stands also reflected that level of intent. Benebone was a standout example, creating a space that combined creativity with genuine engagement . It was also great to reconnect with familiar faces including Paul Nolan and Victoria Lowe , reinforcing how connected this industry remains across markets.

What Happens Outside

the Show Floor

Some of the most valuable insights came from conversations outside the show itself.

The industry does not switch off when the doors close. Conversations continue in hotels, restaurants, and across the city, and those are often where the most honest discussions take place.

During those moments, I reconnected with clients and candidates I have worked with in the UK who are now operating in the US.

Seeing them succeed in a different market, leading teams and contributing to business growth, is a powerful reminder of the long-term impact of getting hiring decisions right.

I also had the opportunity to reconnect with Clayton Payne , who is now building the Pet Business Disrupters Podcast and making a strong impact in the industry.

There were also some great moments of wider visibility for the industry, with figures such as Mario Lopez and Brandon McMillan supporting the show and bringing additional attention to the space.

Hiring Strategy Is Becoming a Competitive Advantage

One of the most consistent themes throughout the week was hiring .

Many businesses are focused on growth, but there is still a clear gap in how recruitment is approached.

Some are managing it internally without the right expertise. Others are working with partners who do not fully understand the industry.

Conversations with the Pet Sustainability Coalition highlighted how closely hiring, culture, and long-term sustainability are linked.

Candidate experience remains a critical and often underestimated factor. It directly influences employer brand, perception, and long-term success.

This is an area where the right approach can create a significant competitive advantage.

Purpose Still Sits at the Heart of It All

One of the most important aspects of the week for me was seeing how visible rescue and welfare organisations were within the show.

Among all the innovation and commercial activity, there was still clear space given to the organisations working to support animals. That balance matters.

As an Ambassador for Birmingham Dog’s Home , this is something I care deeply about. The industry exists because of animals, and it is important that we do not lose sight of that as it grows.

There were also initiatives supporting local shelters in Orlando, including product collections and donations, which was great to see. It reinforced that even at this scale, there is still a commitment to giving back .

Final Thoughts

Global Pet Expo reinforced something that is becoming increasingly clear.

The pet industry is evolving quickly. Innovation is strong, investment is there, and ambition is high. However, the businesses that will lead the next phase of growth will not simply be the ones with the best products.

They will be the ones that build the right teams around those products.

Across every conversation, every brand, and every piece of innovation I saw, the same question kept coming back to the surface — who is actually driving this forward?

That is where the difference is made.

I have spent my career working in that space, helping businesses across the pet and animal health industry build teams that do not just look good on paper, but actually deliver .

Crufts 2026 - Reflections from Walking the Floor of the Pet Industry

Katie Fletcher shares her observations from this year’s show, from industry growth to seeing teams thrive and why Discover Dogs remains a personal highlight.

This year’s Crufts felt a little different for me.

I missed last year’s show, and previously The Animal People had always been exhibiting. This time I experienced Crufts from a completely new perspective, walking the halls, reconnecting with clients, meeting new businesses and really taking in the energy of the industry around us.

And the energy was incredible.

Crufts is always busy, but this year felt particularly vibrant. It was fantastic to see both established brands and new businesses entering the industry, all bringing fresh ideas, innovation and a real passion for pets.

Our focus this year was simple: spend time with people and understand what brands are doing differently. Walking the floor gives you a unique perspective, you hear conversations, see the pride teams have in what they’re building, and get a real sense of where the industry is heading.

Walking the halls also reminded me how broad the pet sector has become. Alongside well-known brands were smaller and emerging businesses bringing fresh energy and new ideas into the industry, which is always exciting to see.

One of the most rewarding moments for me was seeing candidates we’ve placed thriving within their businesses. In several cases, individuals we supported into roles less than a year ago are already building and growing teams of their own.

It was also a real moment of pride walking past stands and seeing full teams that we’ve helped bring into businesses over the years . Seeing those teams together and thriving is a powerful reminder of the trust the industry places in us, something we’re incredibly grateful for.

For the first time, I also managed to step away from the trade halls and watch some of the competitions in the main arena, including Flyball and Agility. It’s easy to forget just how much dedication, training and teamwork goes into these events. Watching the dogs and their handlers work together was incredible and a great reminder of the commitment behind the sport side of Crufts.

Of course, Crufts isn’t just about business.

My favourite part of the show every year is Discover Dogs . I know we’re meant to stay focused on the trade halls, but I always find myself heading there at some point. Seeing the different breeds, chatting to owners, asking questions and getting plenty of dog cuddles is always a highlight. And I have to admit, the gorgeous Bichon Frisés are always my favourites.

Events like Crufts are also a great opportunity to step back and observe the industry as a whole . Spending time on the floor, speaking to founders, teams and partners gives a real insight into how businesses are evolving and where the sector may be heading next.

Crufts brings together the entire pet industry, founders, teams, innovators and animal lovers alike. Walking the floor this year reinforced something we see every day in our work: while products and brands continue to evolve, it’s ultimately the people behind them who shape the future of the industry .

A Pinch Me Moment at the Houses of Parliament: The State of UK Rescue

Attending APDAWG’s State of UK Rescue at Westminster

On Tuesday 24th February, I stepped out of Westminster tube station and looked up.

The sun was shining, which after months of grey, drizzly British weather, felt almost symbolic. Then there it was: Big Ben standing proudly in front of the Houses of Parliament.

I’ve lived in London before, yet I don’t think I’d ever stood that close to Parliament.

How is that even possible?

As Ambassador for Birmingham Dogs Home , I was attending APDAWG’s annual “State of UK Rescue” event held in Committee Room 14 at the Houses of Parliament.

It was, quite honestly, a pinch-me moment.

Inside the Houses of Parliament: History Meets Urgency

The Houses of Parliament are extraordinary. Ornate. Historic. Heavy with centuries of decision-making.

Walking through the corridors, including the room where Her Majesty The Queen lay in state. The craftsmanship, architecture and history are breathtaking. Photography isn’t permitted in many areas and even if it were, it wouldn’t capture the atmosphere.

But as powerful as the building is, what truly mattered was what was being discussed inside it.

The Current State of UK Dog Rescue

APDAWG’s “State of UK Rescue” event focused on the growing crisis within the UK rescue sector.

The issues discussed were stark:

The ongoing hangover of abandoned pandemic puppies
A relentless cost-of-living crisis
Rescue centres at capacity across the UK
Greyhounds stuck in the system awaiting rehoming
Increasing mental health strain on rescue staff and volunteers
The long-awaited Government consultation on licensing rescue shelters

Dog rescue in the UK remains in a state never seen before and yet the sector continues to fight.

Standing up to speak in Parliament is no small achievement. It is nerve-wracking. It is high-pressure and every single speaker delivered with courage and conviction.

I was particularly moved by Tammie Fox from Pumpkin & Friends, who cares for disabled pets. Her speech was heartfelt, honest and deeply powerful. Advocating for the most vulnerable animals inside Parliament takes real bravery.

These stories were lived experiences.

The Mental Health Impact on Rescue Workers

One of the most sobering themes of the evening was the personal toll rescue work takes.

Rescue staff and volunteers:

Witness neglect and suffering daily
Work long hours for modest pay
Experience emotional burnout
Carry the consequences of irresponsible ownership

And still, they show up.

My admiration for people working in animal rescue is immense. Listening to their stories inside Parliament cemented something for me and that is the UK rescue sector needs more structured, sustained support.

Why UK Animal Welfare Laws Must Go Further

There is an urgent need for stronger animal welfare legislation in the UK.

If someone harms an animal, the consequences should be meaningful.

Protecting voiceless animals should not feel secondary. It should be foundational.

The upcoming Government consultation into licensing rescue shelters is important but legislation must continue to evolve to properly address neglect, irresponsible breeding, abandonment and cruelty.

The Pet Industry’s Responsibility to Support Rescue Centres

Now I want to speak directly to those working within the pet and animal health industries.

If your business profits from the lives of animals, you have a responsibility to give back.

The pet industry does enormous good but it also influences behaviour. It can drive trends, encourage ownership, and make pet ownership look easy and aspirational.

When reality doesn’t match expectation, rescue centres absorb the consequences.

So ask yourself:

What is your company doing to support UK rescue centres?
Are you actively contributing to animal welfare initiatives?
Could you be doing more?

Whether it’s fundraising, donations, structured partnerships, sponsorships or awareness campaigns there are practical ways to make a difference.

Doing nothing is no longer an option.

Marc has been instrumental in pushing for legislative change in animal welfare, and the veterinary profession should be incredibly proud of his work.

This wasn’t just another networking event, it was a reminder.

At the end of last year, I was incredibly honoured to be given the title of Ambassador for Birmingham Dogs Home .

It’s a role I’m immensely proud of - not because of the title itself, but because of what it represents after almost a decade of consistent support, advocacy and genuine commitment to a charity that changes lives every single day.

This felt like the natural next step in a journey that has been building for years.

I’ve been a dog person for as long as I can remember. Giving back to dogs who haven’t had the best start in life has always mattered to me, but over the last five years in particular, my role as Managing Director and Co-Founder of The Animal People Recruitment Company has given me a much bigger platform to make a difference.

Through our Platinum corporate partnership , we donate to Birmingham Dogs Home every time we make a placement. That means that the work we do - placing brilliant people into pet and animal health businesses - directly supports rescue dogs. It’s something I’m incredibly proud of and something that sits at the heart of how we operate as a business.

Beyond financial support, I’ve been able to introduce Birmingham Dogs Home to senior decision-makers, brand leaders and a wide community of animal people who genuinely care. Watching those introductions turn into long-term supporters, donors and advocates has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career.

To now stand alongside fellow Ambassadors like PJ Ellis and Dr. Scott is incredibly special. They are people I admire greatly, and both are passionate, authentic supporters of animal welfare.

Together, we share one goal: to help Birmingham Dogs Home support as many homeless dogs as possible, and to do it in a way that brings the wider community with us.

My relationship with Birmingham Dogs Home really began during a volunteer day with my team. I walked in expecting a meaningful team-building experience, but what I left with was a deep emotional connection that stayed with me.

Seeing the number of dogs arriving through absolutely no fault of their own, the emotional weight carried behind every kennel door and the tireless dedication of staff and volunteers completely changed my perspective.

That day opened my eyes to the true scale of rescue work and how heavily it relies on generosity, advocacy and people showing up consistently. From that moment on, I knew Birmingham Dogs Home would always be part of my world.

This year started on a very personal note for me as well. I supported my family in rescuing their own puppy, Cooper , a seven-month-old Maltipoo. His story was heartbreaking, but watching him settle, trust again and bring joy into my parents’ and brother’s lives has been incredible.

It’s a powerful reminder of something I see time and time again through Birmingham Dogs Home and that is that rescue dogs don’t just get saved - they save people too .

Over the years, I’m proud to say we’ve donated thousands of pounds directly to Birmingham Dogs Home. Last year alone, we donated almost £7,000 , making it our biggest year of financial support to date.

But one of my proudest moments came at PATS , where we donated our entire stand space to the charity. By introducing our clients and contacts to Birmingham Dogs Home and encouraging product donations, we collectively generated £45,000 worth of donated products in a single event.

That didn’t happen by accident. It happened because people care and because when you give a charity visibility and trust, incredible things follow.

This year, we’ll be doing it all again, including donating our stand space at PATS at the NEC in Birmingham . As Ambassador, my mission is simple and that is to raise more awareness, more money and more donations than ever before .

One of the things I always make sure people understand is this:

Birmingham Dogs Home receives no government funding .

The charity relies entirely on donations, sponsorships, fundraising and community support to operate.

The charity cares for dogs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and provides vital veterinary care, behaviour support, rehabilitation and rehoming services to over 2,000 dogs every year.

Here are some vital stats that really bring home the scale of what they do and the challenge they face :

They care for around 190 dogs every day across their two centres.
They receive absolutely no government funding, meaning every pound they spend comes from the generosity of the public and businesses.
The average cost to care for a dog in their care is about £100 per week, with seriously injured or ill dogs costing much more!!

These aren’t small numbers. These aren’t occasional costs. This is ongoing, life-saving work - financed by everyday people who care.

donating food, treats, toys or essential supplies
giving your time through volunteering
fundraising as an individual or business
donating practical items like washing powder, which they get through in huge volumes

Every contribution, no matter how small it feels, makes a tangible difference.

This year felt like a celebration. Not just of products or services, but of people. A vibrant cross-section of the animal health world showed up: innovators, clinicians, industry leaders, graduates, start-ups, familiar friends and new faces. And with them came a sense of community that feels uniquely connected to the London Vet Show .

The show floor was alive with exciting product launches and bold ideas. Congratulations to every business that invested the time, creativity and courage to put their innovations front and centre.

For Waheeda personally, it was also a joy to reconnect with candidates she has placed over the years, many of whom are now thriving in roles they once doubted they could land. She was also able to catch up with long-standing clients who have become friends, as well as new companies keen to explore how we can support their recruitment strategies in the future.

My Takeaways from Las Vegas and the Future of

Pet Industry Talent.

This August, I had the privilege of travelling to Las Vegas for SuperZoo 2025 – the 75th anniversary edition of North America’s largest pet industry trade show. With more than 20,000 attendees, over 1,100 exhibitors (including nearly 500 first-timers), and over 1,000 new product launches, it was an event that broke records and set the tone for where our industry is heading.

As the Co-Founder of The Animal People Recruitment Company, specialists in Pet and Animal Health recruitment, I see events like SuperZoo through the lens of people, culture, and talent. For me, SuperZoo was about much more than the numbers. It was about the people, the ideas, and the values shaping the pet and animal health world — and how the right talent will always be the defining factor in who thrives.

From Global Pet Expo to SuperZoo

Having a ttended Global Pet Expo several times, and working across international markets in the pet and veterinary recruitment sector, I was genuinely excited to be invited to SuperZoo for the first time. That invitation came from the amazing Lashonda Geffrard, founder of Elevate (formerly the Black Pet Business Network). Lashonda asked me to join a panel on the Emerging Brands Stage to discuss Diversity & Inclusion in the pet industry – a subject that I care about deeply.

And before you roll your eyes, let’s be clear: diversity and inclusion isn’t about ticking boxes. It’s about building better businesses and stronger teams. After all, how can you have a pet brand that speaks authentically to such a wide range of pet owners, if your teams don’t reflect that same diversity? If everyone comes from the same background, you’ll only ever connect with one type of customer.

That’s why I was so excited to contribute to the conversation.

The Panel: Diversity & Inclusion in Action

On stage, I shared that the lack of diversity in business isn’t a pipeline problem – it’s a system problem. If systems aren’t designed to welcome difference, difference won’t thrive. The same applies to recruitment: if you always fish from the same pool, you’ll always catch the same fish.

Culture matters too. If people feel they have to shrink themselves to fit in, don’t be surprised when they leave. Diversity isn’t just good PR – it’s good business. Consumers (especially in the pet and animal health sectors) can spot authenticity a mile off.

I also want to give thanks to Jo Major, whose work on inclusive hiring has influenced my own approach. She continues to show that diverse recruitment practices are not only possible but essential to growth.

Being recognised in Vegas by people who follow my work on LinkedIn was an incredible moment. To meet people face-to-face who value the conversations we’re starting about talent, culture, and inclusivity in recruitment reinforced why I do what I do.

The Show Floor: Innovation Everywhere

The SuperZoo show floor was buzzing with creativity and fresh thinking. Among the biggest themes this year were:

Sustainability in Pet Products – eco-conscious packaging and supply chain responsibility are now industry standard.
Pet Wellness & Nutrition – from senior care solutions to functional supplements and mobility products.
Pet Tech & Innovation – smart feeders, collars, and health tracking tools for modern pet parents.
Gen Z Pet Owners – shaping product design, digital-first marketing, and diversity expectations.
Authenticity in Branding – brands that live their values and reflect diverse communities are winning customer trust.

Even celebrity names were part of the mix — Katherine Heigl made an appearance to promote her own pet food brand "Badlands Ranch". I was gutted I didn't get to meet her, I'm a big fan of her acting work.

Life Beyond the Show

Of course, no trip to Vegas would be complete without a few adventures outside the show floor. I stayed at the Bellagio (highly recommend it) and enjoyed some incredible vegetarian food spots and cocktails. Highlights included discovering Fat Tuesdays, experiencing The Sphere’s Postcard from Earth, and taking in the views from Vegas’s answer to the London Eye.

The real surprise, though, was a night out at Gipsy, a historic gay nightclub Vegas. One evening felt like stepping into an episode of Pose — full of energy, performers, and community spirit. We even wrapped up the trip with a drag show there. Those moments of culture and connection made the trip unforgettable.

Why Talent Matters More Than Ever

Walking through SuperZoo, one truth stood out above all others: talent remains the greatest differentiator . Innovation and new product development are exciting, but without the right people to bring them to life, they mean very little.

Every successful pet and animal health brand I met had one thing in common — diverse, passionate, committed teams driving their success. At The Animal People Recruitment Company, we’ve seen it first-hand. The right people don’t just fill roles; they transform businesses, inspire teams, and connect brands more authentically with their customers.

A Night at the Dogspiracy Premiere

Earlier in the week, I had the privilege of attending the world premiere of Dogspiracy — a raw, emotional, and vitally important documentary created by someone I deeply admire: Dr. Marc Abraham OBE, directed by Paul Crompton. Marc is one of my heroes. His tireless campaigning for animal welfare in the UK and beyond is nothing short of inspiring. Being invited to witness the result of years of advocacy, courage, and compassion was an honour I won’t forget. Dogspiracy shines a bright (and often uncomfortable) light on the dark side of the pet world — particularly the horrors of puppy farms and puppy mills in both the UK and US. It wasn’t an easy watch. I got home around 1:30am, but couldn’t sleep. My head was spinning with thoughts, heartache, and a fire inside me to do more. Marc will also be joining me on my podcast soon so watch this space!

Why This Work Matters

As someone who has spent years recruiting across the pet, veterinary, and animal health industries, my passion for animal welfare has only grown. Every conversation, every placement, every candidate story reminds me that we all have a part to play.

BVA Live 2025! What An Energising Week for the Animal Health Industry!

As a regular visitor to BVA Live, it was a pleasure to be back at the Birmingham NEC this year and what an event it was!

I had the chance to once again attend alongside my fabulous colleague Chris Whatling , and as part of our small but mighty team, it’s always a privilege to be among so many passionate professionals who are shaping the future of the veterinary and animal health industry. We’ve worked hard to build a positive reputation as trusted consultants in this space, and it was genuinely heartwarming to hear people acknowledge the impact we’re making.

A special moment for us was receiving praise from people that follow us on our socials, for our involvement with Birmingham Dogs Home , a charity we’re proud to support as Silver Patrons. It means a lot to know that our efforts to support better animal welfare outside of recruitment are being noticed and appreciated.

BVA Live isn’t just about catching up; it’s about tuning into what’s new, what’s changing, and what’s exciting in the industry. This year felt especially upbeat and energised. Chris and I noted that the exhibition space was brighter, the footfall heavier, and there was a real buzz around the keynote sessions and panel discussions, with Vets and RVNs queuing en masse to grab seats in the theatre and seminar areas.

We were particularly impressed by the advancements in diagnostics and the new pharmaceutical developments and product launches being showcased. These are clear indicators of an industry that’s constantly evolving and innovating.

It was also great to reconnect with familiar faces, including some of the sector’s most respected veterinary professionals and business leaders. Events like this remind us just how collaborative and forward-thinking this community really is.

At the heart of everything we do, is a passion for this industry and the people who make it thrive. We’re not just recruiters. We’re partners, peers, and genuine advocates for animal health.

My Reflections on The Business of Pet's Conference by PIF

Last week, I had the honour of attending the Pet Business Conference organised by the Pet Industry Federation (PIF) . As a specialist recruiter in the Veterinary and Pet Markets, it was a privilege to be invited to join such a passionate and innovative community.

What made this event truly stand out was its intimate setting. Hosted at Cranfield University—a modern and professional venue—it created the perfect environment for meaningful conversations and authentic networking. I had the chance to reconnect with valued friends in industry and make new relationships with inspiring entrepreneurs and industry professionals.

The agenda was packed with thought-provoking talks and panels. I particularly enjoyed the panel discussion hosted by the ever-charged and dynamic Clayton Payne (Founder of Pet Business Disruptors Podcast). It was great to hear from three key leaders in the pet industry, Peter Roy (Nutriment), Claire Gavin (Founder, Innovation Pets) and Bob Hanson (Pets Around The World), who shared their experiences on transforming innovation into sustainable business growth. Their real-life stories and practical advice offered a refreshing look into the possibilities ahead for our sector.

One standout moment for me was the session on AI and emerging technologies. This was Q&A session with Kirsty Skeates (Founder & Owner of PetBizAi.App) and Scarlett Trillia(CEO, Porter Labs). It’s exciting to see how digital innovation is already beginning to shape the future of pet care and pet businesses. As someone deeply involved in talent acquisition, I couldn’t help but think about how these changes will also influence the types of roles and skill sets in demand in the coming years as Pet businesses evolve.

Did you know AI Hallucination is real thing – you need to be able to use AI smartly and challenge the output – Have you verified the info? Did you give AI enough context and info to generate an accurate output?

On the day I attended, we had 6 Innovation Pitches from start up businesses who presented on their company brand - we were encouraged to vote for our favourite based on specific criteria including Creativity, Sustainability, Innovation etc. A range of bespoke pet furniture, nutritional Supplements, dog car seats and even gaming and interactive platforms for dogs were all represented.

The winner was The Muzzle Movement, presented by Clara Hewson who delivered a compelling pitch and showcased an encouraging video case study of a client they had recently helped with their product.

We then had an extremely topical presentation from Hannah Lyford (NielsenIQ), Megan Niven (CACI) and Lara Baitarian (CACI) who explained the importance and the use of data insights for enhancing your business proposition. For example, knowing the buying habits of your customers in a particular postcode area, as well as what sort of TV programs they watch, may impact the pricing of your pet products in your retail store!!

Some really clever analytics were demonstrated and surprisingly, I discovered lots or resources are available for free if you know where to look and who to ask!

Beyond the formal sessions, what truly resonated with me was the sense of shared purpose. Whether speaking with founders of startups or leaders of established brands, there was a clear commitment to doing business in an honest, customer-centric way—with the ultimate goal of improving the lives of pets.

Events like these remind me why I love what I do. I came away not just with new connections, but with a renewed sense of enthusiasm for helping businesses grow through great people and helping talented individuals find meaningful careers in this incredible industry.

Why Supporting Young Talent Matters: Welcoming Maisie to Our Team!

At my companies The KC Group and The Animal People Recruitment Company , we talk a lot about people being at the heart of what we do. That doesn’t just mean clients and candidates—it also means investing in future talent and creating space for young people to explore the world of work.

This month, I had the joy of working with Maisie , a bright and enthusiastic young student who joined us for a week of work experience. We don’t believe in making tea and filing papers—we believe in real experience, genuine learning, and helping young people see the possibilities in the professional world, whether that’s in recruitment, pet, animal health, or beyond.

Maisie’s energy was infectious from the moment she stepped into KC Group HQ, and by the time she joined us a t The Animal People Recruitment Company, I knew she was going to leave with a fresh perspective on what a career can look like when it’s filled with purpose and people who care.

My Work Experience at KC Group & The Animal People Recruitment Company - By Maisie

"I was really excited (and a bit nervous!) the night before my work experience started. I planned my outfit with my mum and had an early night because it felt like a big day.

When I arrived at KC Group, I was welcomed warmly. Everyone introduced themselves and made me feel like part of the team. My day started with a “money meeting,” where the team reviewed their priorities for the week. Everything was written on a big board and there was so much energy—it was fun to watch and really team-focused.

Throughout the day, I got to shadow different team members and learn about all the roles they recruit for. It was amazing to see how everyone works together to help people find jobs.

A big highlight was joining a video call with the Business Operations team. They interviewed someone applying for a sustainability analyst role (I had to Google what that meant afterwards!). After the interview, the team planned how to support them, which I found really impressive. I didn’t realise how much work goes into recruitment—it’s not just about sending CVs!

Later, I joined a meeting with a children’s charity the KC Group supports. It was inspiring to see how the company gives back and supports causes outside of recruitment.

I also learned about a website called Reed, where the team searches for CVs. I helped look for candidates for an HR role in Berlin. At first I was nervous, but once I got going, it was fun—I even found five good profiles!

Later in the week, I joined a video call with the Finance team, where they were helping someone who had recently lost their job. I was surprised by how kind and caring everyone was. You can tell they really want to help people.

One of the most exciting parts of my week was visiting The Animal People Recruitment Company with Sarah (who owns both businesses). They usually work from home, but that day they were based at Birmingham Dogs Home —it was amazing! We were surrounded by dogs, some even came over for cuddles, and I joined meetings about how the team supports businesses in the animal health and pet industries.

At the end of the visit, we presented a £3,700 donation t o the Dogs Home to help care for abandoned dogs. It was such a special moment to be part of.

I told all my friends about my week—none of them had an experience like mine. I feel so lucky to have been part of something so inspiring.

I had an amazing week. I learned so much about recruitment, teamwork, and what a real workplace is like. It was brilliant—and I’d love to come back one day.

A Great Start at Heathrow

Before I even set foot in Orlando, I staye d at the Renaissance Hotel at Heathrow the n ight before my flight — and honestly, I was so impressed. Simple parking, super comfortable rooms, and a lovely pre-trip vibe. Highly recommend if you’re flying out soon.

On the flight over, I sat next to the loveliest lady — we chatted the entire way and made the long-haul journey so much more enjoyable. It was one of those serendipitous moments that just sets the tone for a great trip.

Welcome to Orlando!

I stayed at the Rosen Inn on International Drive, and for anyone attending the show on a budget — it’s great value for money. Clean, comfortable, and perfectly located for getting to the convention centre (and clocking up those step counts… more on that later!).

Inside Global Pet Expo 2025

Held at the Orange County Convention Centre, Global Pet Expo brought together over 1,100 companies, more than 3,100 booths, and thousands of pet industry professionals from around the world. As a recruiter in the pet and animal health space, it was the perfect opportunity to soak up the energy and innovation shaping our sector.

And a personal highlight? Being recognised by so many attendees from the US market! It was humbling and exciting to see how far our work at The Animal People Recruitment Company is reaching across the global pet industry.

Key Themes and Takeaways from the Expo

This year’s show felt more future-focused than ever — and here are a few of the big takeaways that really stood out...

1. Expansion of Specialty Areas
There was a clear effort to cater to niche and emerging segments in the market:

The Aquatics & Exotics section featured everything from freshwater and saltwater décor to innovative reptile enclosures — beautifully presented and buzzing with interest.
The Pet Sustainability section, hosted in partnership with the Pet Sustainability Coalition, showcased brands leading the way in eco-conscious innovation. With sustainability a hot topic, it was great to see this area expanding.
The Start-Up Pavilion gave newer companies the spotlight — and there was a real buzz of creativity coming from this zone. It’s always exciting to see where fresh thinking might lead the industry next.

2. A New Keynote Series With Serious Impact
This year introduced a new keynote stage — and it deliver ed. I sat in on Bert Jacobs, CE O of Life is Good®, who shared his journey with optimism at the heart of business — such a refreshing talk.

There was also a brilliant panel hosted by CNBC’s Tyler Mathisen , focusing on the 2025 economic outlook for pet retailers. It featured leaders from PetSmart, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Nestlé Purina, Meijer, and Central Garden & Pet — the kind of data-driven conversation that gets you thinking about where the industry is headed and how we support it from a talent perspective.

3. Recognition of Top New Pet Products
While I’ll admit the New Product Showcase didn’t blow me away across the board, the winners did highlight where innovation is thriving:

Booster Berries Chicken Supplement won in the Farm & Feed category.
Mazuri Koi Pond Nuggets took the Aquatic category.
And Always Full Pet Water Bowl received top honours in the Cat category — clever design meets function.

4. Continued Emphasis on Sustainability
Sustainability wasn’t just a buzzword — it had a full-on presence. The Sustainability Theatre, led by the Pet Sustainability Coalition, hosted ongoing sessions on how the pet industry can make meaningful changes. From packaging to sourcing and waste reduction, the message was clear: conscious consumers are driving real change.

5. A Shift Toward Cat-Specific Innovation
I was really excited to see so m uch focus on feline-specific products this year. From nutrition and hydration to enrichment and behaviour — cats were finally getting their moment! Considering the growth in cat ownership, this is absolutely the direction the market should be heading.

Personal Highlights & Brand Love

A major joy of attending was catching up with clients and seeing people I’ve placed thriving in their roles. That’s the kind of full-circle moment that never gets old.

I discovered a brand I completely fell in love with — Vetreska. Their designs are stunning, from sculptural cat trees to chic leads, bowls, and even scented poo bags (coffee-scented, no less!). It was design-meets-function at its finest, and their stand just sparkled with creativity.

It was also lovely to see the friendly and passionate team at Woof again — they’ve clearly been busy, with loads of brilliant new products added to their range since I last saw them.

A huge thank you to West Paw, w ho gifted me a very cool enrichment game that I’ll be talking about more on LinkedIn soon. Enrichment is still such an underrated area of the market, and I’m thrilled to see brands doing it well.

20,000+ Steps a Day… and a Dodgy Ankle

I clocked over 20,000 steps every single day — which I’m sure is why I’ve come home with a very sore ankle! But every step was worth it. Whether it was a spontaneous conversation, a seminar, or a surprise discovery — this show got me moving!

One of the most exciting parts of the trip? Lining up some amazing guests for my upcoming “Meet the Animal People” podcast. Discovering the Future of Pet Care at Iberzoo Propet 2025: Trends, Innovation, and Inspiration from Madrid

As a specialist recruiter in the Pet and Animal Health industry, I had the incredible opportunity to attend Iberzoo Propet 2025 in Madrid—one of the most exciting trade shows in the pet care world. From groundbreaking products to unique trends, this event showcased the latest and greatest in pet accessories, food, and technology. Katie and I couldn’t have been more thrilled to dive into the world of innovation and gain insights that will shape the future of our recruitment efforts. And let's just say, it was an experience we won’t forget!

A New Wave of Pet Accessories: One of the first things that caught our attention at Iberzoo was the creative explosion in pet accessories. I mean, who knew cats and dogs needed car seats? Yes, you read that right—there were innovative car seats designed specifically for our furry friends. It’s clear that pet owners are becoming more conscious of their pets' safety, especially during car journeys. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There were also accessories like luxurious pet beds and personalized pet items that took pet care to a whole new level. Pet comfort is serious business now!

Oh, and don’t even get me started on the scented kitty litter. A simple concept, yet something that could make a huge difference for many cat owners. It’s the small, thoughtful innovations like these that are shaping the future of the industry.

Veterinary Technology: A Glimpse Into the Future: The presence of new technology vendors really stood out. We saw a lot of cool stuff in the realm of veterinary diagnostics and imaging tools. These innovations are helping vets make quicker, more accurate decisions that improve the quality of care our pets receive. I can only imagine how these tools will enhance the work of veterinary professionals in the coming years. It was inspiring to see just how much technology is improving the health and well-being of our animals.

Pet Food: A Natural Evolution: Another major takeaway from the show was the growing focus on natural pet food. As more pet owners become conscious of what goes into their pets’ bowls, the demand for grain-free, premium meats, and seafood options is on the rise. Many exhibitors had stands dedicated to high-quality, locally sourced ingredients. Spain’s strong culinary heritage shines through, especially in the pet food market, with Iberian Ham making an appearance in pet food products! It’s no surprise, given how meat-centric Spain is, but it was interesting to see the focus on high-quality, Spanish-sourced meat for pets.

Welcoming Vendors and a Shared Passion: Despite the language barrier (our Spanish is definitely a work in progress), we were amazed at how warm and welcoming the vendors were. Every conversation felt like a shared passion for pets and a mutual goal to provide top-notch care for our furry, feathered, and scaly companions. Whether they were explaining the benefits of their products or sharing their vision for the future, it was clear that the vendors truly cared about the animals they serve.

Conclusion: Looking Ahead to New Opportunities: As a UK-based recruiter, attending Iberzoo Propet has given me invaluable insights into the pet care sector. It’s exciting to see how innovation is shaping the future, and I look forward to supporting businesses in Spain and Portugal with their commercial recruitment efforts. Whether it was dragging my mum into toy shops to complete my toy animal collection, watching Vets in Practice, David Attenborough documentaries, All Dogs Go to Heaven, and Flipper on repeat, or growing up surrounded by pets who shaped my childhood, animals have always been my passion.

Today, I share my life with my two rescue cats, Harper and Bear, and my Cavapoo, Rodney, who is my pride and joy.

While I never became the vet I once dreamed of, I’ve spent over a decade building a career in recruitment that allows me to work exclusively within the pet and animal health industries .

Seven years of attending the London Vet Show, and I’m still amazed by the energy, creativity, and innovation on display!

Last week marked my seventh year in my career to date attending the London Vet Show, and once again, it was an unforgettable experience! For our team at The Animal People, it’s not just an event—it’s an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the energy, innovation, and passion that define the veterinary and animal health industry.

Every year, the London Vet Show surprises and delights with its eye-catching stands, fun gimmicks, and creative games that pull in the crowds—particularly appealing to the vets walking the show floor. It’s clear that companies put a lot of thought into their displays, and this year was no exception. But what really stood out to us wasn’t just the shiny new stands or the giveaways (though they were fantastic). It was the people—the reps and representatives who brought their energy and passion to every conversation.

We could see how much these professionals believe in their products and services. Their willingness to engage, explain, and connect with their audience added an extra layer of excitement to the event. It’s a reminder of what makes this industry so special: the drive to improve animal health through collaboration, innovation, and shared enthusiasm.

This year’s event also showcased some remarkable advancements in diagnostics, cutting-edge capital equipment for clinics, and exciting developments in veterinary medicine. We also were delighted to see Pet brands and products we work with, being represented more this year at LVS, with some start-ups even making a play for the big league!

It’s clear that the future of animal health is brighter than ever, and we’re thrilled to be part of this journey.

Proud to Stand Alongside the Industry's Best at the PIF Awards 2024

Last week, The Animal People team had the honour of attending the PIF Awards as headline sponsors for the very first time. It was a night filled with pride, excitement, and immense gratitude for the community that we’ve come to know so well. Our entire team—Katie, Sarah, Sheila, and Waheeda—came together to celebrate, alongside two very special guests, Fi Harrison and Rachel Frost from Birmingham Dog's Home. As platinum patrons of this incredible charity, we were thrilled to share the evening with Fi and Rachel, who work tirelessly to improve the lives of dogs in need.

The PIF Awards was more than just a gathering; it was a celebration of people who are united in their commitment to bettering the lives of pets. From businesses creating innovative pet products to organisations that champion animal welfare, it was inspiring to be surrounded by so many like-minded individuals who share our passion. There’s something truly special about this community. It’s deeply connected and driven by a shared purpose that goes beyond business—it’s about making a real difference in the lives of animals and their owners.

As our MD and Co-Founder, I had the privilege of presenting the award for Online Business of the Year, which was won by the fantastic team at Tug-E-Nuff . Huge congratulations to them! They are doing incredible work, and I encourage everyone to check them out. Although I wasn’t feeling my best on the night, the energy in the room was infectious, and it was amazing to see so many familiar faces. I have to say though, the team truly made the most of the night and partied on my behalf! I may have missed out on some of the fun this year, but I’m already planning to make up for it at next year’s awards!

I was particularly moved by seeing our clients and candidates, people we’ve worked with closely, thriving in their roles and contributing to this wonderful industry.

As I sat at our table, I took a moment to look around the room and was overwhelmed with pride. Our company, which started with a vision to bring something different to pet and animal health recruitment, was now a headline sponsor at one of the industry’s most prestigious events. To see The Animal People logo alongside longstanding, respected brands like YuMOVE, Johnson's Veterinary (too many to mention) was a real "pinch me" moment. Sarah and I were both blown away. Another year, another incredible PATS exhibition in the books! Our third time exhibiting at the event was nothing short of amazing, and it felt like a reunion. Walking through those familiar halls and reconnecting with friends, clients, and candidates reminded us exactly why we do what we do—and just how important the pet industry is to us at The Animal People Recruitment Company.

One of the greatest highlights was seeing so many of the candidates we’ve placed over the years thriving in their roles within our clients’ businesses. Conquering Snowdon for Birmingham Dog's Home: A Night to Remember

WE CLIMBED SNOWDON FOR OUR LOVE OF DOGS!

What a night! On Sunday, 9th June, Katie, her husband George, my fiancé Rich, and I set off on an epic adventure up Snowdon to raise funds for Birmingham Dog's Home. It was tough but I loved it!

We kicked things off at 7:30 pm, boarding a coach in Birmingham with 40+ amazing Birmingham Dog's Home staff and supporters. Everyone was excited and nervous at the same time as we embarked on our journey to Snowdonia, home to Wales' highest peak, Snowdon, standing at a majestic 1,085 meters (3,560 feet).

Arriving at a pitch-black car park with no facilities was an adventure in itself. Katie and I had our first (of many) "wild wees" under the stars! Waiting in the cold while other charity groups registered with the organisers Elite Adventures UK was a bit chilly, but hearing everyone's motivations for the climb—ranging from mental health support to cancer awareness—was incredibly moving and inspiring.

Our trek began in the charming miners' village of Llanberis, where we hit the Llanberis Path. Known for its steady incline and scenic views, this path starts off with a bang—a steep climb that had everyone feeling the burn right from the start. George, our fitness guru, sped ahead like a mountain goat, while the rest of us settled into a more leisurely pace. Head torches lit our way through the darkness, with the eerie glint of sheep's eyes keeping us company.

At times, walking in silence and in the dark felt like a scene from a zombie film where everyone has left behind their zombie infested town in search of refuge, with only the beam of our head torches piercing the inky blackness.

As the night wore on and the crowd thinned, the thought of the dogs and the support from our sponsors kept our spirits high. I became the group snack supplier, much to everyone's amusement, with my stash of goodies fuelling our ascent. The higher we climbed, the colder and windier it got, with gusts up to 30 mph. It felt like we were in a scene from Lord of the Rings!

Despite the thick clouds that hid the sunrise, the views were breathtaking. Standing at the summit with our Birmingham Dog's Home team, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride. We had conquered Snowdon for a cause we deeply care about. Fun fact: Snowdon's summit is said to be the resting place of the mythical giant Rhitta Gawr.

The descent was another story. It was tougher than the climb, with daylight revealing the stunning landscape of Snowdonia. My knees felt every step, and Katie had to walk backward at times due to her sore toes. Thankfully, Rich and I were there to support her all the way down.

By 7.30am, we reached the bottom, utterly exhausted but exhilarated. After being awake for 27 hours, I could hardly believe what we had accomplished. Doing it with my best friend and fiancé by my side made it even more special.I'm thrilled that we took on this challenge. It not only pushed us to our limits but also deepened our bond with the charity and its incredible team.

As I write this blog we've raised £1,345 by doing this walk for Birmingham Dog's Home and reaffirmed our commitment to this fantastic charity. As platinum business patrons, we will continue donating every time we place a candidate in a role within the pet and animal health industries.

When Sarah Grace and I set up the Animal People Recruitment Company three years ago, I already had eight years of recruitment experience. Throughout my career, I had worked with various recruitment businesses. Some were brilliant, but unfortunately, most were not due to the cultures they had cultivated. Too often, I joined companies with high hopes, inspired by their promises and impressed by their interview processes. However, I quickly realised the cultures were not a fit for me.

The primary focus of these businesses was on placements and revenue, with little regard for anything else. Mental health was rarely discussed, and the well-being of consultants seemed unimportant to the owners. Burnout was common, and many people left because they weren’t supported. The companies lacked the care and attention necessary to help employees achieve their goals, operating with a churn-in, churn-out mentality.

So, when Sarah Grace and I decided to create the Animal People Recruitment Company, our vision was clear. We wanted to build a company based on kindness, honesty, and inclusivity—values we still uphold today. Our goal was to foster a flexible culture, allowing our workforce to work from anywhere in the UK. We wanted to support our employees and their lives outside of work too. We want our people to do the school run without worrying and pick up their kids after school too. We want dog owners to take longer lunches to walk their dog's and enjoy the things that spark joy in their working day.

We aimed to empower our employees to be authentic and never feel like they had to hide their true selves. As a minority group member, I know what it’s like to face discrimination. Therefore, I am passionate about ensuring everyone can be themselves at work.

What I love most about working in recruitment is that I can literally change people's lives. I've helped so many people get into jobs they've dreamt of having, and there's no better feeling than helping someone secure their ideal job. It’s what drives me every single day. However, there is another side to recruitment that many people aren't aware of. As recruiters we have to be resilient, we get lot's of rejection from potential clients and we often act as counsellors to our candidates. It comes with the job, but it can take a toll on us. We get lots of no's and handle hundreds of calls weekly from candidates who are frustrated or unhappy in their current situations. Hearing these stories can impact our mental health, so it’s crucial that companies support their recruiters' well-being.

At Animal People Recruitment Company, we prioritise our employees' health and ensure they have access to mental health support when needed. We partnered with BHSF to provide our employees access to excellent well-being and healthcare services, some of which I have personally benefited from.

Last year, I struggled with my mental health due to various factors, including challenges from my childhood and growing up gay in the 90s and early 2000s. I decided to undergo therapy sessions through BHSF , which proved life-changing. For anyone struggling, I encourage you to talk to someone and consider therapy—it can make a significant difference.

Working on my mental health has involved making several small but impactful changes in my daily life. I started using Kirsten Butler’s "3 Minute Happiness Journal," writing in it every day to set myself up for the day and practice gratitude. Every morning, I wake up, look out my window, and thank the universe for another day. I then high-five myself in the mirror, a practice I adopted from Mel Robbins' podcast . It may sound cheesy, but it has positively impacted my mindset.

Working from home, I still get ready for the day in clothes that make me feel good. I take my dog, Rodney, for a walk every morning, which helps me get close to 15,000 steps a day. Rodney has been an incredible source of joy and companionship, reinforcing my love for animals and driving my passion for our business.

Listening to positive music and podcasts during these walks has also helped improve my mental health. I keep my home clean and tidy, as a clutter-free environment contributes to a clearer mind. Recently, I re-evaluated my friendships and set boundaries with those that were no longer serving me. This has led to a significant improvement in my well-being.

Additionally, I have reassessed my alcohol consumption. I don't drink at all during the week, but like many people my age, I used to binge drink on weekends. This often led to anxiety the following day. By significantly reducing my alcohol intake, I have felt much better overall. If you find yourself drinking too much on weekends, I highly recommend cutting back and noticing the positive impact it can have on your mental health.

The role we play as Platinum Business Patron to Birmingham Dog's Hom e is something I am very proud of, and we are now climbing up Snowdon to raise more funds and awareness for the charity. Partnering with Birmingham Dogs Home has also done wonders for my mental health. It really feels good knowing that I am doing my part to help animals that are in need.

Another practice that has greatly improved my mental health is focusing on activities that spark joy. Last November, I practiced "No-Vember," where I said no to things I didn’t want to do, which had a positive impact on my mental health. Recently, I've taken up gardening, and it has been absolutely brilliant. I enjoy going out into my garden, planting new plants, and tending to everything I have. It truly sparks joy. I'm also signed up for pottery classes as I have neglected my artistic side for far too many years and can’t wait to get started.

If you are reading this and you are lucky enough to have your own business or be in a position where you have team members working with or for you, please be kind to them, treat them well, and make sure that you have a positive impact on them. It is an absolute privilege to have people looking to you within a business for support, guidance, and reassurance. It's a responsibility that I do not take lightly as I know what it feels like to work for people that have not deserved me in the past.

Mental health is no joke; it's crucial to take care of yourself. If you’re struggling, reach out for help. Numerous resources are available online if you don’t have someone you feel comfortable talking to.

And if your job makes you unhappy, consider looking for another opportunity. Life is too short to stay in environments that don’t bring you joy or make you feel appreciated. There are countless opportunities out there—you just have to go out and grab them.

What a great few days we had in Orlando...

Katie and I want to share a little about our latest adventure with you all – our trip to the Global Pet Expo in sunny Orlando! We had an absolute blast catching up with clients, checking out the coolest new products, and made some amazing new connections.

We are entrenched in the UK's pet industry recruitment scene and attending events like the Global Pet Expo isn't just about shaking hands and swapping business cards. It's about diving headfirst into the ever-evolving world of pet care and witnessing firsthand the exciting changes happening in the industry.

Let me tell you, this year's expo was awesome! With over 1,100 exhibiting companies showcasing the latest and greatest in pet, it was something else! It was held at the orange county convention centre in a space that span across the size of SIX football fields! According to the stats from the expo's website, attendance records were smashed, with thousands of industry pros flocking to Orlando to soak up the innovation. The innovation on display was so interesting and inspiring.

The new product showcase was such a highlight for me. From toys, food and treats to board games for dogs the showcase had it all. Reptile to small animal, cat and dog - there was a product for every pet and owner to enjoy. There was said to be 1,000 new products over 13 categories to be exact! The innovation that many of these brands are bringing to the table with their products is incredible.I have returned from the show feeling even more connected and in love with what I do more than ever.

It was brilliant to reconnect with our friends from across the pond, like the great people from Happy Pet Products and Multipet (huge thanks for the nostalgic Lamp Chop toy – brought back fond memories of one of my childhood TV favourites!) and the always lovely Bugalugs. We were also able to catch up with our US and Canada based clients and see their latest products and teams in person.

Amidst the bustling aisles, one brand that really caught our eye was 'Animals Like Us,' hailing all the way from New Zealand, making waves with their innovative food and treats in the US market. They had a really impressive stand with pet influencers and a cool dinner party set up too. Nulo had us intrigued with their array of new launches, from cold-pressed foods to gently cooked meals. Both stands were super busy.

The trend for freeze-dried raw foods was unmistakable, and collagen seemed to be the buzzword of the expo. It was fascinating to see how every nutritional brand had ventured into the realm of supplements, adding a new dimension to their offerings.

I couldn't help but be impressed by the cat food brands from Made by Nacho and our friends at Whitebridge, it was great to see so much product for cats at the show. There was even an amazing bengal cat (@surfercatmav on instagram) who has appeared on Netflix shows doing tricks for passers by in the aisles!

The sheer diversity of toy brands was astounding too. However, I must admit, I was disappointed not to spot my favourite harness and accessory brand, Zee.Dog – maybe next time!

There's just so much to rave about from the show floor; I could spend hours recounting the impressive lineup of brands. Each one brought something unique and exciting to the table, making the Global Pet Expo an unforgettable experience.

But you know what truly made this trip unforgettable? The people. We had the pleasure of catching up with both old and new clients, chatting about exciting opportunities, and witnessing firsthand the success stories of brands expanding into new territories. It was inspiring, to say the least.

To everyone who showed us love and support at the expo, we can't thank you enough. Your trust and belief in what we do mean the world to us. And to our American friends, your hospitality and warmth made us feel right at home – you sure know how to treat your guests!

As we look back on our time in the US, we're already counting down the days until our next adventure. It's a wrap on London Vet Show 2023!!!

For me exhibiting at the show was not only a testament to our commitment to the industry but also a celebration of the vibrant community that we've built.

I was blown away by the support and kind words of people who I spoke to at the show. I was told so many stories that almost bought a tear to my eye. I am so appreciative of everyones support, there aren't really the words to describe how much it means to me.

The heart of our success lies in the genuine appreciation for every person who takes the time to engage with us. The Animal People team and I understand the value of connections in this close-knit industry, I have such gratitude for those who stopped by our booth and talked to me and the team on their stands!

Both days were filled with meetings, lots of laughs. I LOVED catching up with existing clients and witnessing firsthand the success stories of candidates we have placed into roles within many exhibiting companies.

We made another donation and I met some of the dog's who need a loving home.

�� An Unforgettable Visit to Birmingham Dogs Home! ��

Yesterday, I had made another visit to Birmingham Dogs Home and I couldn't wait to spend time with some beautiful dogs looking for their forever homes.

One of the highlights of my visit was meeting Boing! -the newest resident in our sponsored kennel! Boing is such a lovely dog, so loving and affectionate and full of energy.

I also spent time with four other amazing dog's Tallulah, a one-year-old crossbreed, with boundless energy and an infectious zest for life.

Dolly, a four-year-old Patterdale terrier, who luckily for her is going to a new home today!

Tyson, a gorgeous five-year-old Rottweiler, a very sweet natured boy who would make a lovely companion.

Finally I met Pebbles a sweet little Frenchie who was found as a stray.

Thank you to Josh and Rachel for introducing me to all of the dog's it was such a great morning! ��

Reflecting on this visit fills me with immense pride and gratitude for our ongoing partnership with Birmingham Dogs Home. It is an honour to support such a remarkable organisation that is dedicated to rescuing and rehoming dogs in need.

Do you know what to do once a recruiter gets you an interview?

IF A RECRUITER GETS YOU AN INTERVIEW, MAKE SURE YOU DO THESE THINGS…..

1. Ensure that you have the correct date, time and location for the interview. If it’s a video interview, check you have the correct tech installed.

2. Ask the recruiter how the have sold you in. What have they said about you and why you should get the job.

3. Make sure you know the salary that the recruiter has said you need.

4. Ask what to wear - the recruiter may have had sent candidates to this client previously and they should know the dress code which you should always try to mirror.

5. Ask what type of interview you’ll be having so that you can prepare. Ask the recruiter who is interviewing you and do some research on them on LinkedIn if possible.

6. Ask the recruiter to do a test/role play interview with you if you are nervous or want to practice.

7. Ask the recruiter for information on successful candidates in the past. What were their backgrounds? What did they do at interview that the client loved?

8. Call the recruiter straight after your interview so you don’t forget anything and give honest, detailed feedback. If they aren’t available leave a voicemail with lots of info and they’ll call you back.

9. Give the recruiter time to gain feedback for you. They are busy people that can be juggling 10+ vacancies and 50+ candidates for each role at a time. A good recruiter will never sit on feedback if they have it so try to be patient.

Two more dog's have been re-homed after staying in our sponsored kennel at Birmingham Dog's Home!

So far this year The Animal People Recruitment Company has donated £1,500 to Birmingham Dog's Home!

This money helps the charity care for the dog's who need their help. The money that we donate enables us to sponsor a kennel at the centre. In total our kennel has now helped three (hopefully soon to be four) dog's who have now found their forever homes! Blu was the first dog in our kennel and he is getting on so well in his new home!

This year our kennel has been a temporary home to two gorgeous dog's. Tucker, an 11 month old Large crossbreed and Bear, a 4 year old Lakeland Terrier with bags of energy have now both found their new forever homes!

The Animal People Recruitment Company just exhibited at Cruft's for the very first and it was incredible!

The snow sent us a challenge but nothing was going to stop us from attending the biggest dog show in the world!

Thank you to everyone who came and visited us on our stand in hall 2. We loved seeing each and every one of you. We hope you liked your goody bags! ��

Whilst at Cruft's we met up with so many of our friends in the industry and met so many new amazing people and their dog's too! ��

We heard countless stories from people who we have helped over the past two years and it was so lovely and at times quite overwhelming; but in a good way of course!

It's just so fantastic to know the positive impact that we are having on people's lives in a an industry that we care so deeply about!

2023 is shaping up to be an incredible year for us and we could not be happier to be part of the pet and animal health industry.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression and that goes for video calls too.

Here are Chris' top tips to ACE your video interview and please trust him; if you do these things it will make ALL the difference.

�� Dress to match the company dress code. Ask your recruiter what the dress code is or have a look online. If unsure always lean toward the smarter side of smart-casual ��

�� Test the video tech and connection prior to the interview.

�� Ensure your background environment is tidy. If not consider a virtual background - these can take the pressure off you too.

�� Make sure your camera is at the right height! Don’t have it set too low so you are looking down, you want it to be at eye level.

�� Have good lighting, you wouldn’t interview in the dark in person so don’t do it online! ��

�� Ensure where you are sat is quiet with no distractions.

Relax and enjoy it! Take pleasure in the fact that you have been able to do the interview in your slippers! ��

Blu found his forever home!

We’ve got some great news!!! ��

As you may know we support Birmingham Dogs Home and have a kennel that we sponsor.

When we took over the kennel there was a dog called Blu living in it. Poor Blu had been in the kennel for over a year.

He just couldn’t find the right people for him ��

HOWEVER 2023 is clearly Blu’s year as he has now found his forever home! We are so happy to let you all know that a lovely couple have adopted him.

We are so excited to announce that The Animal People Recruitment Company will be exhibiting at Crufts 2023!

Our MD & Founder Chris Whatling said:

"For as long as I can remember Crufts has been a date in the calendar for my family and I.

My nan used to show her chow's and I first attended the show with her, I must of been around 7 years old. I loved everything about it. To see her and the dog's so happy was something that connected us and I loved everything about it.

From then on I watched or attended the show every year. My family will to this day all tune into 'best of show' and we'll talk about it on our WhatsApp groups.

The show falls over my birthday and for me to be able to go to Crufts on my birthday is like the best day ever ��

What also makes it special is that Cruft's is held at the NEC, Birmingham - the city that became my home over 12 years ago and where I started my recruitment career.
