Business Development Manager – Sustainable Pet Nutrition
Edinburgh (Hybrid)

We’re working with an innovative Scottish start-up that is developing a more sustainable future for the pet food industry.

The company has created a science-led ingredient produced by repurposing a natural by-product from another major industry, helping pet food manufacturers improve the sustainability of their products without compromising quality or nutritional performance.

With strong technical foundations and growing commercial momentum, the business is now entering an exciting growth phase and is looking to appoint a Business Development Manager to help accelerate adoption across the UK and international pet food markets.

This is a hands-on commercial role in a purpose-driven company where sustainability, innovation and responsible sourcing sit at the heart of the business.

The Role:

As Business Development Manager, you will take ownership of driving commercial activity across the pet food sector.
You’ll manage the full sales lifecycle — from identifying new opportunities and opening conversations, through to commercial agreement and long-term account development.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Generating and converting new business opportunities within the pet food sector
  • Managing the full sales process from prospecting through to contract completion
  • Developing and expanding key customer relationships
  • Building strong relationships with procurement teams, buyers and commercial stakeholders
  • Engaging with NPD teams, formulators and nutritionists who influence ingredient selection and product development
  • Maintaining accurate CRM reporting, forecasting and pipeline management
  • Collaborating closely with internal technical and operational teams to ensure successful product integration
While procurement teams are typically the formal buying function, success in this role will require the ability to influence both technical and commercial stakeholders.

This is an execution-focused commercial role, ideal for someone who enjoys building relationships, progressing opportunities and bringing innovative products to market.

About You:

We’re keen to speak with commercially focused professionals who bring:
  • Around 5+ years’ experience in sales, business development or account management roles
  • A proven track record of developing new business and closing B2B agreements
  • Experience managing key accounts and commercial negotiations
  • Confidence engaging both technical and commercial stakeholders
  • Strong CRM discipline and pipeline management
  • A proactive, self-starting and results-driven approach
Experience within pet food, animal feed, animal nutrition or functional ingredients would be highly relevant.

However, we are also open to candidates who bring strong commercial experience from adjacent sectors, including:
  • Veterinary / animal health
  • Animal pharmaceuticals
  • Diagnostics or laboratory services
  • Other technical B2B life science environments
Even if you don’t yet have an established network within pet food ingredients, candidates who understand technical sales and relationship-led business development within these sectors would be of strong interest.

Culture & Mindset:

This is a team that genuinely believes in improving the sustainability of the pet food supply chain.
People who thrive here tend to care about:
  • Responsible sourcing
  • Sustainable ingredient innovation
  • Improving how animal nutrition products are produced
Alongside commercial capability, the company is looking for someone who shares this mission-driven mindset.

Location & Flexibility

The role is ideally field based around Scotland, with the expectation of spending at least one day per week in the office (Edinburgh) to support collaboration with the wider team.
Some flexibility may be considered depending on the candidate.

Package & Benefits
  • Base salary £40,000 – £50,000 (DOE)
  • Discretionary performance bonus (paid at financial year end)
  • Electric vehicle scheme
  • Hybrid working model
  • Enhanced holiday allowance
  • Company pension contribution

Career Development:

This is a rapidly growing organisation with significant commercial momentum.
As the business scales, there will be genuine opportunities for:
  • Progression into commercial leadership roles
  • Exposure to international markets
  • Broader involvement across the business as it grows
For ambitious individuals, this role offers the opportunity to make a real impact within a mission-led company at an early stage of its journey.

If you’re excited by the idea of helping bring innovative, sustainable ingredients to the pet food industry, we’d love to hear from you.
