Creating a Dog-Friendly Office: Unleash the Paw-sibilities!

Chris Whatling • June 23, 2023

Here are our tips to help you have the best version of your own dog friendly office!

  • Establish Guidelines: Set clear guidelines for bringing dogs to the office. Define which areas are dog-friendly and establish basic rules for behaviour, such as no jumping on furniture or excessive barking.

  • Create Safe Spaces: Designate comfortable and cozy areas for dogs to relax and rest. Provide dog beds, blankets, and toys to make them feel at home. Consider setting up a play zone with interactive toys for their entertainment.

  • Pet-Proof the Environment: Ensure the office space is safe for dogs by removing any hazardous items or toxic plants. Secure electrical cords and create barriers or gates for areas that should be off-limits to furry friends.

  • Sanitary Solutions: Set up designated outdoor areas or indoor dog toilets for bathroom breaks. Supply waste bags and cleaning supplies to encourage pet parents to clean up after their dogs. Regularly clean and disinfect common areas to maintain a hygienic environment.

  • Communication and Consent: Establish open communication channels between employees to address any concerns or conflicts that may arise. Obtain consent from all employees regarding their comfort level with dogs in the office to ensure a harmonious environment.

  • Training and Socialisation: Encourage dog owners to invest in proper training and socialisation for their pets. Well-behaved and sociable dogs contribute to a positive office experience for everyone.

  • Allergy Awareness: Be mindful of potential allergies or sensitivities among employees. Consider designated areas or pet-free zones for those who may have allergies or prefer to work without canine companions.

  • Safety First: Display clear signage indicating the presence of dogs in the office to inform visitors and prevent any unexpected surprises. Ensure that all dogs are up-to-date on vaccinations and have a dog-friendly workplace insurance policy in place.

  • Health and Wellness: Promote the well-being of office dogs by allowing regular exercise breaks and encouraging pet parents to take their dogs for walks during breaks. Provide access to fresh water and ensure proper ventilation in the office space.

  • Celebrate Pawsome Moments: Organise pet-friendly events and activities to celebrate the bond between employees and their furry friends. Plan "Doggy Birthdays," pet costume contests, or charitable events to engage the entire office in the dog-friendly culture.

By implementing these strategies, you can create a dog-friendly office that fosters a positive and inclusive work environment while promoting the well-being of both employees and their beloved four-legged companions.

Get ready to unleash the paw-sibilities and enjoy the perks of having furry coworkers by your side!

Key takeaways from the PIF Business Conference Last week, I attended a series of expert-led sessions hosted by Bird & Bird , in partnership with the Pet Industry Federation (PIF) , focused on a challenge that’s still very real for our industry: exporting pet products from the UK into the EU post‑Brexit . First, a genuine thank you to PIF for the invitation and for bringing businesses together to talk openly about what’s working, what isn’t, and where the risks really sit. These conversations matter , because exporting into Europe today is not what it was five years ago, and pretending otherwise helps no one.
